At the time CASA volunteer Erica was assigned to Amy’s case, she discovered Amy* had run away from the foster home she was living in. Using Amy’s email address, Erica used social media to message her, explaining her role and how she was there to support her. Amy responded, and over the next few month's Amy and Erica built a rapport. Amy confided in Erica that she was looking forward to closing her case and being out of the foster care system since she was turning 18 in the next few months. Amy also informed Erica that she was pregnant and was afraid of her baby being taken away if she were to return to her foster placement. Erica was also pregnant at the time and notified Amy she could receive benefits until she was 21 if she kept her case open. Erica accompanied Amy to her doctor’s appointments, as well as gave her tips on pregnancy. With the help of Erica's lawyer, Amy was able to keep her case open and now her and her baby are eligible for benefits. Erica continues to support Amy as needed, along with her husband Craig who is also a CASA volunteer working on a cases of his own. * Youth's name has been changed. Yesterday, an elder sat on the steps of the Statehouse during the Take A Knee National Mother's March because she needed to rest. A state trooper told her that she could not be on the steps—though it is the people’s building. So the rest of the protestors sat with her in solidarity. Suddenly, it was no longer illegal to sit on the steps. We outnumber police: and they know it.
It was a very powerful moment during a powerful event. And because the people dared to sit on the steps of their own statehouse, more state troopers were called to guard the building from...its citizens sitting on the stairs for a moment to rest from protesting police brutality. All power to the people!

Q: What I’m most excited for starting medical school? I'm so excited to learn more about medicine, to meet my amazing classmates, and to participate in essential work in achieving health equity.
Pre-Med Tip: Being a pre-med can definitely be difficult especially if you don't have much support. Find mentorship, especially from people whose stories are similar to your own. Be stubborn about your goals, but flexible about your methods of achieving them. Life is not a linear journey. While it's important to set specific goals for yourself, give yourself grace when the path to achieving your goals differs from what you initially envisioned. Finally, take care of yourself!
Fun fact: I'm bilingual! I speak English and Tigrinya.
